Take Newt Gingrich, for instance. Only four years ago he was willing to sit on a love seat with Nancy Pelosi and film a commercial for a campaign headed by Al Gore. In it he explained that he agreed with the California Congresswoman and then-Speaker of the House that the time had come for action on climate. This fall, hounded by Morano, he was forced to recant again and again. His dalliance with the truth about carbon dioxide hurt him more among the Republican faithful than any other single “failing.” Even Mitt Romney, who as governor of Massachusetts actually took some action on global warming, has now been reduced to claiming that scientists may tell us “in 50 years” if we have anything to fear.

In other words, a small cadre of fervent climate-change deniers took control of the Republican Party on the issue. This, in turn, has meant control of Congress, and since the president can’t sign a treaty by himself, it’s effectively meant stifling any significant international progress on global warming. Put another way, the various right wing billionaires and energy companies who have bankrolled this stuff have gotten their money’s worth many times over.

Bridges usually go right over water – they don’t even touch the surface. Surprisingly, if you submerge the vast majority of the structure under water, allowing pedestrians to effectively travel between the waves, it makes the whole experience of using a bridge much more exciting. Moses may have thought of it but it’s taken about 3,000 years for us to catch up, all thanks to Dutch architects Ro & Ad.

So that means things like wool, coconut or hemp clothing could be waterproofed, too. The result is a superhydrophobic coating that successfully withstood assault from acids, bases, soaps and solvents and lasted through 50 washing machine cycles. It’s more water-repellent than car wax or Teflon, according to the American Chemical Society. This is partly because of the angle of attack on the deposited fabric.

A new kind of space race is underway as the USA, Germany, and Japan strive to build robots that can help repair the International Space Station and satellites. It was only a matter of time before Russia entered the fray, thanks to NPO-AT (Android Technology) and the Central Research Institute of Machine Building(administered by the Russian Federal Space Agency). They’ve built a teleoperated humanoid called the SAR-400 which is the spitting image of NASA and General Motor’s Robonaut 2, and they plan to send it to the ISS within the next two years.

Like the R2 it has no legs, allowing it to be fitted to a crane on the ISS to save astronauts the trouble of stressful space walks. The operator wears a head-mounted display, jacket, and gloves which relay movements directly to the robot’s head, arms, and hands. However, a company rep says their gloves are the first to transmit tactile sensation from the robot to the operator. This means a cosmonaut can operate tools and equipment more naturally, since he or she can “feel” the object in their hand. In the case of an emergency where the robot’s hand becomes trapped, the pressure transferred to the human operator is sufficient to alert them to the problem but will not harm them. […]
